Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dear Fellow Polish Educators,
Please share with your students the following information about the exciting opportunity to study Polish language, literature, and culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and our generous scholarships for those seeking to engage with Poland’s cultural heritage at our university.
The Polish Program at UW-Madison is the oldest Polish program in the United States, established in 1935 thanks to the efforts of Polish American community in Wisconsin. Over the years, the program has evolved and grown but our sense of mission remained constant. In 2012, the Program’s dedication to promoting Polish and bringing them to a wider audience in the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea, has been recognized and awarded the prestigious Polonicum Distinction Award by the Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners at the University of Warsaw.
Today, with our newly revised curriculum, we are pleased to offer our students four-years of Polish language instruction on all levels from beginner to advanced, as well as a wide range of new courses on Poland’s literature, film, and culture and their impact on the modern world.
Prospective students can choose to study Polish in addition to another major – and we offer retro-credits for those already proficient in the language to help them meet the program requirements! – or enroll in one of two certificate programs that engage with Poland’s culture and history, namely a Certificate in East Central European Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, or a Certificate in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies. Whatever their future career plans are, we help our students realize their goals while providing them with one of the best undergraduate learning experiences in Polish language and culture in North America!
University education puts a heavy financial strain on students and their families. Fortunately, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, in particular the Lapinski family, we are pleased to offer generous scholarships that provide money for UW-Madison tuition for students studying Polish language, literature and culture.
